An officer in charge of a part of a taluq (a subdivision of a district) who exercises most of the powers of a Tahsildar (a revenue officer). Example: The mahal kari was responsible for collecting taxes and maintaining land records in his jurisdiction. Combines the Arabic word 'mahal' (division of a district) and the Persian suffix 'kar' (doer) from the verb 'kardan' (to do).
